‘Super Flu’: What Is It and Why Is Everyone Talking About It?
Every winter, we see headlines about a “super flu” — but what does this actually mean?
Despite the dramatic name, there is no official virus called ‘super flu.’ Instead, the phrase usually refers to:
a severe influenza strain circulating during the season
a flu that lasts longer or hits harder than expected
a co-infection (flu + another virus), which can feel much worse
Flu can often be prevented or lessened in its impact, by having a flu vaccine. Still not had one? Check out the link below:
What are the symptoms of a severe flu infection?
Many people wonder about ‘super flu’ symptoms when they experience:
high fever
intense body aches
extreme fatigue
persistent dry cough
loss of appetite
chills
headaches
If symptoms last beyond 7–10 days, it may no longer be flu at all - it could be a secondary infection such as sinusitis, pneumonia, or a chest infection.
When should you seek help?
You should get medical support if you have:
difficulty breathing
chest pain
confusion
symptoms lasting more than 10 days
a long-term condition (asthma, diabetes, heart disease)
weakened immune system
At Pharmacy Clinic Edinburgh, our Pharmacist Independent Prescribers can advise on symptom management, and if required, prescribe treatments for severe infections.
