UTI Symptoms — What to Watch For

A urinary tract infection (UTI) is extremely common, especially in individuals assigned female at birth, and symptoms can appear suddenly.

Typical UTI symptoms

  • burning when passing urine

  • need to urinate frequently

  • passing small amounts

  • lower abdominal discomfort

  • cloudy or strong-smelling urine

Can a UTI resolve on its own?

Yes. Often, for people with a mild lower UTI, increasing water intake and using over the counter products (as recommended by your pharmacy team), symptoms can go away on their own. This typically takes 24-48 hours.

When to seek help urgently

Not all UTIs can be left to resolve. Seek medical help if:

  • you are a person assigned male at birth and are experiencing UTI symptoms

  • you are experiencing fever

  • you have back or side pain

  • you have nausea or vomiting

  • you are experiencing symptoms in pregnancy

  • you have blood in urine

  • you have symptoms lasting longer than 48 hours
