How Long Does Flu Last?
The flu usually comes on suddenly — and the most common question is: how long will this last?
Typical flu timeline
Days 1–3: Fever, aches, chills, fatigue, cough start suddenly
Days 4–7: Symptoms peak, energy very low
Days 7–10: Fever usually settles; cough and fatigue may remain
Weeks 2–3: Post-viral fatigue and lingering cough are common
Most people recover within 7–10 days, but full energy can take 2–3 weeks to return.

When flu feels longer
Flu can linger if:
you develop a secondary infection
symptoms worsen instead of improving
you have underlying respiratory conditions
you catch another virus during recovery
How can I be sure it is the flu?
The only way to truly know if you have the flu is to complete a self-testing kit (pop in to see us for one of these if you’re interested!)
However, there are some differences in the symptoms of flu from other viral illnesses:
Cold-y symptoms like runny nose, cough and sore throat are common with most respiratory viruses, including the flu
Fever is a common symptom in the flu, but not necessarily present in other viruses.
Body aches, chills, joint pain and fatigue are very common in flu infections, but not necessarily present in other viruses.
If you’re unsure whether you still have flu or something else, our clinicians can help you assess and treat symptoms through an online consultation.
